Reflections on tribes, countries and a new world order

Door San Daniel gepubliceerd in Wetenschap en onderwijs

The British followed a rule, 'the balance of power.' Which meant that you did not allow others to become more powerful than you. If a neighboring nation threatened to become your equal or surpass you, you would simply exterminate them. Great Britain, became a superpower, they became the great British Empire. " Great they were, until the Second World War, they formed the greatest empire the world had ever seen. Larger than the Greek Empire and many times larger than the Roman Empire at its peak. In terms of power and influence, America took over the dominant role after World War II.

The balance of power was an old, tried-and-tested principle, the British gave it a name, but traditionally the balance of power has been a system that has been used by a group, a tribe, a country to decide whether or not to expand.

How does that work? If two tribes live next to each other and they are in 'balance', then there is a period of peaceful existence side by side and a mixing of the tribes can take place, or if the cultural differences are too great to blend in, you wait for the appropriate moment to conquer the other tribe.

We do not have to go far back. Very recently in the 90's with the machete massacres with the Hutu tutsis. a recent example of how genocide takes place on tribal level and kinship.

'The Rwandan genocide, also known as the genocide against the Tutsi, was a mass slaughter of Tutsi in Rwanda during the Rwandan civil war, which had started in 1990. It was ruled by members of the Hutu majority government during the 100-day period of 7 April to mid-July 1994. An estimated 500,000 to 1,000,000 Rwandans were killed, corresponding to an estimated 70% of the Tutsi population. In addition, 30% of the Pygmy Batwa was killed.

The genocide and widespread massacre of Rwandans ended after the Tutsi-backed and heavily armed Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF), led by Paul Kagame, took control of the capital and the country. An estimated 2,000,000 Rwandans, especially Hutu, were displaced and became refugees. ' Talk about balance of power.

However, we are already talking about two tribes in an existing country, but how did we become what we are today?

A family of cave dwellers inhabit an area. An area with a limit of hunting opportunities or food gathering spots. If a second nomad group threatens to settle, also hunters and collectors, tensions arise because the food admission system remains the same. If both groups are in balance, they can together expand the food area by destroying a third group on outside territories. This already requires a form of organization and agreements.

A covenant is made and executed. After a considerable time a new phase enters, the nomadic existence loses its attractiveness and tribes settle down, and will focus on domesticating animals and agriculture.

Some are more successful in this than others and have, for example, more children, who will work together to assist the parents and the tribe. The largest farmer takes on less successful farmers as servants.

After some time, a class forms, of those who work, and those who are protected by the owners of those large areas, and have to perform services'. The feudal system is born and in exchange for labor or the relinquishment of part of their own harvest (first form of tax) to the great owner who in the meantime has a small army of servants, to protect them with his army, against marauding gangs.

If Christianity also makes its appearance then we are where all civilizations have been, be it Egypt, the Inca, or the Hindu-Asian cultures.

A priestly caste commences and society becomes a tripartite.

- The farmers who take care of the food

-the gentry who have an army and protect their own people

- the priest caste (read the church) who must pray for victory and secure good harvests.

Eventually ruling classes arise that have large areas of liege in their possession and above them there is a certain family that believes that they are chosen. They would have blue blood and were appointed by God. The king used the church and the church, the king and the rest, the rest was just happy to be alive. An oath was taken. An oath of allegiance. The serfs belonged to the great landowner, a nobleman and had obligations to him and swore allegiance to him and his family.

The noblemen did so to the king and so society became a well-structured machine. The kings once again owed their allegiance to the Pope or Supreme Priest and the emperor, if appointed.

The king ruled as far as his land reached, and the king and the church levied taxes. Sometimes a king was ambitious and would attack a neighbor, or, as in primitive times with the tribes, he forged a covenant to jointly occupy and share a third territory. The underlying idea was always self-interest, more subjects, more tax.

There were other ways, occasional marriages were made, just to increase power or territory. There were only a limited number of countries and the corresponding royal families, so inbreeding began to appear (think of the Spanish Jacoba the insane or Charles VI of France). The Russian court suffered from hemophilia, the blood disease, the inability to stop bleeding when suffering a wound.

Countries have now become united and the European Union, however we feel about it, is a fact. Continents unite into large power blocks or alliances. You can talk roughly about the free West and the rest of the world, in any capacity whatsoever.

The politics in the free West endeavor to be democratic in nature but there are also many areas that seem to be a mock democracy.

Remarkably enough, there are again tribal relationships being formed and cross-tribal relationships in a society that can be called rather complex. Think of sports or music, or a membership of a political party or at which store you 'shop', or at which gas station you fill up.

You can love the Rolling Stones and not football, and others can endorse knitting and the Stones and so there are connections in connections and variables in variables, and people who belong to a group, but like jazz for example and not so much  the Stones, and don't like knitting at all , but playing baseball and our society has so many cross-sections with collections of people who do or do not feel attached to something.

Groups' such as Peta, who see milk as a symbol of white domination/ supremacy (read: as a racist message), subgroups like them, can now openly criticize the ruling class after epochs of growth, their own tribe, the ruling class. This kind of phenomena is not new under the sun..  America with:

A) the Americans in general who are against any kind of colony because they themselves started off as British colony.

B) the American negro population that often refers to their slavery roots.

Where it should be noted that the American civil war, not fought to liberate the slaves, that was a nice marketing story, but more out of economic motives (does not every war start  because of such motives) to break the hegemony of the southern states and its money flows.

(Justus Angel, for example, owner of 84 slaves)

In addition, slaves were 'contracted' to their master for 'only' seven years, after which they were able to build up their existence in America as a free man. Ironically, the 'old' slaves almost immediately acquired slaves if they could afford it. The greatest slave owners, were released slaves. (appears from the census and tax declarations in the Southern States ... as slaves were seen as possessions and were therefore taxed.)

see my article: ' Slaves and Blacks that became slave owners..'

There have been shifts in the formation of our society. From nomadic tribes who hunted in an area and gathered food, to agriculture and domesticating animals, to power structures and the three classes of society and the formation of administrative states.

Now we are in ever-growing partnerships. It has not gone without a struggle. From an area, say the size of a province, to a piece of land consisting of provinces, which we conveniently call a country, to a united number of countries, that can be a military block, eg the Nato, or an economic block, Benelux, Opec, the Common Best.

Power, power expansion, political goals and economic interests now go hand in hand until a system will be formed by globalization that will eventually include 1 major trading area.

The physicist Stephen Hawking did some discerning predictions about this in his last essay.

He paints a world which contains frightening aspects. A final world order with a structure that consists of united countries and power blocks under one overseeing government. He has some notes on that. He provides a different kind of class structure, different from all previous classes. He describes the super-rich who, through stem cell techniques, can ensure that their children are physically and mentally superior, which gives them a head start on the 'other' fellow human beings, a class that, as it were, rules in secret.

This rich preferential class will produce the rulers. They will have all possible medical care and virtually eternal life. They will send the military apparatus that consolidates them in their position. If the unequivocal world order is a fact, we have come a long way since we sought refuge in a cave for bad weather. Is the world order a fact than space exploration will find its beginning and we will eventually come into contact with another intelligent life.

I have my reservations about this world view. But that would probably have been the case of our cave dweller in the past when confronted by predictions of our present day world as well.
