Two European countries, corruption in royal circles, so how does the Spanish king go about that

Iñaki Urdangarin, married the daughter of the Spanish king and was raised to the nobility and appointed Duke of Palma de Mallorca. If your father-in-law is king and your brother-in-law is the future king, then you won't go hungry, no two ways about it. And getting a duchy is no sinecure. That was true, but just like the little caterpillar 'never enough', Iñaki thought he did not have enough.

He changed that, he founded a nonprofit institute, Noóse, he became the chairman of the company and devoted public funds to his own benefit. We are on about considerable sums of money.

He aproved projects from public funds that were never executed and within a short time he made a sloppy 6 million euros.

Things go well for as long as they go well and it went wrong for the Duke of Mallorca.

Someone tipped the Spanish anti-corruption office and they subjected the Institute Noóse to an in-depth investigation.

The anti-corruption agency confirmed that Iñaki had traced considerable sums of public funds to accounts in his name, located in a British tax paradise and to Belize.

The king announced that pending the investigation, the duke should not participate in any royal activity, nor should he appear in public with any member of the royal family.

The evidence worsened and piled up and in his Christmas speech the king announced that

"La justicia es igual para todos" ("the law applies to everyone")

He did not give his son-in-law immunity, but put him in court. Everyone can appreciate that in Spain. It did not stop there, he deleted his name from all registers and street names with his name, were changed, and he also stripped him of his title.

We have a king who does not beat around the bush!

What is the matter with such a person? Is it arrogance, vanity or simply 'get it while the getting is good.'

On June 10, 2016, the public prosecutor demanded 19 years in prison and a fine of 980,000 euros. For years the old duke has tried to avoid his punishment through all sorts of legal  ways. The verdict of the highest court has today sentenced him to the prison. No appeal is possible and he starts Monday with his first day in confinement.

Wow isn't that something?

We had a prince, our queen's consort, who also got involved in a bribery scandal, how did things turn out for him?

"The Lockheed affair from 1976, is the name of a bribery scandal in which Prince Bernard received money, as the husband of the Dutch queen, from the US aircraft builder Lockheeds at the beginning of the sixties, and in 1974 Bernhard demanded from Lockheed again a large sum of money, this time if the Netherlands would purchase the Lockheed P-3 Orion.

In the years of the Lockheed issue, the Den Uyl cabinet was, among other things, busy with the replacement of all Dutch Lockheed Starfighters. The government finally decided on the advice of Defense Minister, that the successor of this jet fighter would be the F-16.

The affair came to light through hearings from the Subcommittee-Church of Multinational Organizations, part of the US Senate Foreign Affairs Committee, which investigated bribe affairs involving the aircraft manufacturer. During these interrogations on Friday, February 6, 1976, in public, a "high government official in the Netherlands" was said to have received bribes, Prince Bernhard had been caught out when he was named. "

The prime minister formed a committee of " 3 wise men" and they had to come to a conclusion, behind closed doors, about the prince. "

"-The payments were made as follows: $ 300,000 in October 1960, $ 300,000 in February 1961, $ 200,000 in March 1962, $ 115,000 in July 1962 and $ 85,000 in October 1962.

-In October 1968 something similar happened where it was decided to 'donate' $ 100,000 to the prince.

-The investigation also showed that Bernhard had attempted in 1974 to set up a commission for a possible acquisition by the Netherlands of thirteen Lockheed P-3 Orion patrol aircraft. The requested commission would amount to $ 4 to $ 6 million, depending on the size of the order. "

"The findings of the committee and the conclusions of the government were read in the House of Representatives by Prime Minister den Uyl on 26 August 1976. The announcement was broadcast directly via radio and television Den Uyl took the conclusion of the committee on Bernhard as follows: "
"... that in the belief that his position was untouchable and his judgment unaffected, HRH was initially too light-skinned in transactions which gave the impression that he was sensitive to favors. for undesirable desires and offers Finally, he was tempted to take initiatives that were completely unacceptable, to himself and the Dutch procurement policy at Lockheed - which has put him - in a questionable daylight. "

So he really got punished, right?

Well you know, crime and punishment, not all places are the same, countries do differ.

He was given a "terrible" punishment:

Bernhard had to resign as a result of the affair, all of his honorary duties in business and the armed forces and was advised not to appear in military uniform in public. Bernhard, however, was not fired as an inspector-general of the armed forces.

please note: he was advised not to appear in military uniform in public anymore. Wow some punishment.

Was that his punishment then? Yes, wholeheartedly, Yes!

Bizarre that Spain is so corrupt, and that it is, and applies such different measures.

It sounds like a kind of punishment to Iñaki in the spirit of ...: The former Duke Iñaki may never, never eat melon again, we advise that. Boy some punishment, hey?

I'm missing one (not entirely unimportant) detail:
All those payments were supposed to be made into the accounts of the WNF (World Nature Fund) - a quite respectable institution for saving and protecting wildlife.

actually, what happened was that the 3 'wise' men advised..again advised.. the prince to donate the money to charitie, underwhich WNF
