Healing a Nobleman's Son

Door B B Koster gepubliceerd in Theologie

Therefore He came again to Cana of Galilee where He had made the water wine. And there was a royal official whose son was sick at Capernaum. When he heard that Jesus had come out of Judea into Galilee, he went to Him and was imploring Him to come down and heal his son; for he was at the point of death. So Jesus said to him, “Unless you people see signs and wonders, you simply will not believe.” The royal official said to Him, “Sir, come down before my child dies.” Jesus said to him, “Go; your son lives.” The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and started off. As he was now going down, his slaves met him, saying that his son was living. So he inquired of them the hour when he began to get better. Then they said to him, “Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.” So the father knew that it was at that hour in which Jesus said to him, “Your son lives”; and he himself believed and his whole household. This is again a second sign that Jesus performed when He had come out of Judea into Galilee. (John 4:43-54) NASB.

For the second time Jesus arrives in Cana where He performed His first sign: changing water into wine, at a wedding where Jesus and His disciples were invited. In the story He performs His second sign and again with great authority as the Son of God.

The nobleman's sun is fatally ill had heard about Jesus's arrival and comes to Jesus. He begs Him urgently to come to his home and heal his son, but Jesus has the situation in His almighty hands and points the man first on an important thing: "unless you people see signs and wonders, you simply will not believe." You see, Jesus is testing the man's faith.

For the second time the nobleman begs Jesus to come and heal his son. And now Jesus speaks with great authority the vivifying words: "Go; your son lives." You see: He is the Only One who has the Might and Power to speak such words!

The nobleman believes the words Jesus had spoken and going down he leaves the scene, going back home. His slave meets him and tells that the fever left his son at the seventh hour. Not only the man but his whole household believes in Jesus as being the Son of God.

In this short story Jesus shows again that He is God manifest in flesh. The only One who has the right to speak with great authority words of life! He is not only the ruler over water but over sickness and death too. Wherever Jesus is invited to help or speak words of life, there is joy and happiness!

Wherever a true born again Christian is filled with the Holy Spirit, he will cause gladness and joy, encouraging his brothers and sisters in the Lord and his fellow creature!

If someone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for the one who does not love his brother whom he has seen, cannot love God whom he has not seen. And this commandment we have from Him, that the one who loves God should love his brother also. (1 John 1:20-21) NASB

Man only can love God through the work of His Spirit, so great love to God is not our work but God's. The divine logical order is to love God with all your mind and soul; that's the work of His Spirit and automatically you will love your fellow creature for God Is Love!
